Northern Division
Big Sky Jr. Champs

Letter 1:

Greetings Western Region U16 Champers!

I want to begin, firstly, by congratulating you all on the hard work put in towards qualifying for this great event, and this great OPPORTUNITY. I highlight opportunity because that is exactly what this week is. It is an opportunity. An opportunity to test your abilities. An opportunity to GROW. An opportunity to make friends. An opportunity to make memories. And most importantly, an opportunity to have fun and ski to the best of our abilities.

Speaking on behalf of the entire ND coaching staff... we are extremely excited for the week ahead of us and most certainly will take advantage of the opportunity to work with athletes from across the state. I just got off the phone with Emily, who has been diligently refining her slipping technique in preparation for U16 Champs. Pete has been spending hours per night, sacrificing sleep, to hone in his video zooming skills. John has been mercifully struggling through various high stress course report scenarios, and I myself have been sweating on the 4square court for months now in order to show our athletes who the REAL 4square king is - Sorry Rog.  Needless to say, your ND coaches are ready for Western Region Champs... Are you?

Now, down to some business...

Training

For all of those who are interested, we will be training GS on Wednesday afternoon on Hangman's. This is a great opportunity acclimate, and settle in to the race venue prior to our first official SG training day. Please let me know if you are interested in training GS on Wednesday afternoon.

Logistics

Northern Division will be staying at the Huntley lodge AS A TEAM. Our first team meeting will be 8pm on Wednesday night. We will meet by the front check-in desk at 8pm sharp at which time we will do introductions and cover logistical details for the upcoming week. Such as event times, bed times, schedules, meals, tuning, waxing, etc.

Meals

For breakfast The Huntley provides a free breakfast buffet to all guests. All athletes will be expected to pack or purchase their own lunches. We will not provide lunches to athletes! For dinner, athletes will be expected to eat prior to our first meeting on Wednesday night at 8pm. We will eat AS A TEAM on Thursday night and Friday night and the event banquet is Saturday night - which we will also attend as a team.  For details on the banquet - parents are invited - please see the following link:

https://bssef.com/event/2017-western-regional-u16-championship-banquet/

We are looking for help on dinner for Thursday and Friday nights. We have space available at the Huntley lodge to eat as a team, however we have no kitchen. In the interest of money and ease, it would be INCREDIBLE if we had a family or two (or three) offer to fix up a meal (able to feed all athletes plus 4 coaches) and deliver to the Huntley lodge. Ideas could be pans of lasagna, salad, spaghetti, crockpot of soup and/or chilli - something fairly easy to prepare and transport. If we don't get any volunteers to fix up a meal we will go ahead and plan on hopping in the BSF van and eating out. Please let me know if you are able and willing to prepare a meal for the team!

Letter #2:

Hey All!

For those of you interested in training we have locked down a 1pm - 3pm GS training block on Hangman's on Wednesday. To connect with the ND team on Wednesday, if you do chose to train, simply find John or any other ND member on Hangmans around 12:30ish. We will hopefully be able to get a discounted race ticket for that day, but are working on this right now. The athlete will be in charge of purchasing their own ticket this day, they will just simply do so by going through one of the ND coaches (likely John Steitz) in order to get the discount. Stay tuned for a final decision on race ticket pricing.

As I mentioned in the previous email the first team meeting is 8pm on Wednesday evening. For those of you who will be in Big Sky prior to 8pm, you will have the option of checking in to the Huntley at 4pm. John Steitz will be checked in then - after the training block - and all you need to do is send him a quick text (phone # in previous email) that you're in the lobby and he can guide you to your assigned room!

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Letter #3:

Hey All!

We're locked and loaded for a great week! A couple last informational tidbits and reminders...

Thank you to Laura Asbell for agreeing to prepare a chicken taco bar on Thursday night and to Laurie Newhouse for agreeing to prepare some mac n cheese, BBQ chicken, salad and dessert for us on Friday night! As I mentioned we'll go as a team to the banquet on Saturday night and we don't meet until 8pm on Wednesday so the kids should eat on their own prior to the meeting!

As of now I have only heard from the MARS racers and MSEF racer re: Wednesday training. We will be training GS from 1-3pm on Hangman's. Please let me know asap if I did not just list you and you ARE planning to train.

You can check in as early as 4pm Wednesday to the Huntley.  Simply text/call John or I and we can escort you to your respective room! As always, call/text/email with any questions.

Lucas

P.S. As I'm sure many have heard there will be a Skills Quest comp this year.  This is new to many.  Please see info re: Skills Quest logistics below.

Thursday March 16:  Right after girls Super G training run the 밐angman뭩 Run will be set up with 4 stations of Skills tasks.  In one run down the slope the athletes will stop at each station and preform the task where evaluators will be waiting for them.  Bibs from the training run will be worn outside to identify with a bib drop bucket at the bottom of 밐angman뭩.  We want all the athletes to perform on their GS skis so a little planning needs to be done by them.  The boys will come over after their training run.

SKILLS QUEST TASKS TO BE PERFORMED:  Hopefully we will have a volunteer at each station to help, but we will have several descriptions attached at start for the athletes to read before attempting.

  • Upper Hangman뭩: 밢utside Ski Turns Even though this is a Phase 2 task, it seems that we need to see better performance here.  I am sure every athlete may have heard somewhere about being better balanced on their outside ski.
  • Middle Hangman뭩: 밪ideslip to straight run to sideslip A Phase 4 task testing the ability of a quiet and stable upper body while skis rotate from side to side with a little pause in between.  I am also sure every athlete has heard about this 뱒kill when running Slalom.
  • Hangman뭩 below the 밙nob: 밊reeski Hourglass- A Phase 4 task testing the ability to anticipate using all the skills to carve smoothly from GS radius into a more SL radius then back to GS radius.  This task has been used in ungroomed terrain several times at U16 Nationals and always a great warm up drill for the athletes to use.
  • Lower Hangman뭩: 밣ole Jumpers in a tuck A Phase 3 task in place of a wave track.  Also, used for assessments at U16 Nationals.

This is a plan and may be adjusted due to뀉뀉뀉
